RPD: Store Clerk Arrested After Machete Attack

Another Redding convenience store clerk is accused of attacking a customer, this time with a hatchet. At 6:39PM Thursday night Redding Police were called to the Smart Market on Westside Road by a man who said he had been attacked. When they arrived he was gone but then called and said he was on his way to a hospital. 27-year-old Joshua Emerson-Merte said he was inside the store when the clerk, 38-year-old Chase Ricks, became upset with him and told him to leave. He says he hesitated and Ricks pulled a hatchet from behind the counter and started toward him. As he was backing out the door, Ricks reportedly swung the hatchet at him several times and cut his forearm. Ricks then apparently followed Emerson-Merte to his car and struck the car several times with the hatchet before going back inside. A review of surveillance video seemed to corroborate Emerson-Merte’s story, and ricks was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism.
