Caldwell Fire Continues To Burn Out Of Control Near Canby

Of the several large fires in Northeastern California, the monster is the Caldwell Fire straddling the Modoc/Siskiyou County line near Canby. All the Modoc Lightning Fires comprising what’s called the “July Complex” totaled around 16,000 acres on Sunday. As of Tuesday the 4 fires have burned a combined 70,622 acres, the vast majority of that being the Caldwell, which is still completely uncontained. There are a number of evacuations, including the Medicine Lake Recreation Area and Lava Beds National Monument. The Tulelake area is also threatened, prompting further evacuations, and the community of Tionesta is under mandatory evacuation. An unknown number of structures have been destroyed. To the southeast of that fire complex, there are at least 18 other smaller fires burning in the Modoc National Forest, some of them single trees and some of them a few hundred acres.
