Fire crews have been battling overnight on a blaze in Trinity County. The Flat Fire started at 3:15PM afternoon when a car rolled over on Highway 299 near the Cedar Flat Picnic Area east of Burnt Ranch. It came to rest on its roof and the driver was pulled to safety before the car became engulfed in flames. The fire spread to roadside vegetation and rapidly climbed the very steep mountainside. The highway was completely closed for a few hours, and one-way traffic control continued through the night. Tuesday night the fire was estimated at least 100 acres and burning north toward Ironside Mountain. Several structures are threatened. Resources on the fire include five air tankers dropping retardant, two helicopters dropping water, as well as smokejumpers, engine crews, dozers and ground crews. The terrain is extremely rugged and difficult to access. No updates have been provided yet Wednesday morning.
