A pedestrian was killed in South Redding Wednesday night by a driver who was later arrested. Just before 11 O’clock, 63-year-old Stewart Helmer of Anderson was driving his SUV towing his boat on a trailer in the southbound lanes of Highway 273 when he saw a person near the fog line on the right side. He swerved to try to avoid hitting the person but hit them with the trailer. He immediately pulled over and checked to see how the pedestrian was doing and he called 9-1-1. The person later died at Mercy Hospital. Helmer was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
