REU: Number Of Customers Behind On Electric Bills Grows Despite Bill Credits

Even with $60 Million Dollars worth of credits given to Redding Electric Utility customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the list of late or unpaid bills is still growing, but the time for forgiveness of those bills may be coming to an end. Most REU customers have not had to pay a bill for the past two billing cycles, because of credits passed down from Cap and Trade funds. REU Director Dan Beans told the Redding City Council Tuesday night that they expect most people will have to pay something on their July bills. He noted that the list of delinquencies, which is normally about 200, is now 400 and growing. The council approved a motion that would not begin collecting late fees until august, and even then late bills could be amortized over a 24 month period. Customers can also request a one time waiver of the late fee. Disconnect notices would not begin going out to customers until September. The council will allow the public – with limited numbers – back into its next meeting on July 21st. Social distancing and masks will be strongly encouraged. Meetings since March have only accessible online.
