We’re in the midst of Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month. Last year the Shasta County D.A.’s Office prosecuted 47 cases of elder abuse, and they want people to recognize the signs. They include lack of adequate food, poor personal hygiene, unexplained bruises and other injuries, ripped or bloodied clothing, and unexplained purchases by the primary caregiver. Shasta County has a 24 hour hotline to report possible elder abuse at 225-5798. In Tehama County the hotline is 527-1911. Those who want to take a more active role can consider becoming a gatekeeper for Shining Care and try to recognize victims in the community. Information on the program is at shiningcare.org.
