A significant amount of smoke will be seen over the next few days if conditions allow for a major prescribed burn project at Lake Shasta. The ongoing Green Mountain Project between the Squaw and Pit Arms of the lake is designed to reduce wildfire danger and improve the habitat for species including Bald Eagles, Shasta Salamanders, Deer, Elk and Turkey. The project has been underway for about 17 years. This weekend up to 2,200 acres might be torched, some of it by hand and some of it by helicopter. The smoke will be visible for many miles around.
