Teamwork and technology led to the capture of an alleged gun thief in Shasta Lake City Thursday morning. A woman on Trinity Street discovered a man in her garage with mask partly concealing his face. He fled through her back yard and she called 9-1-1, but she was so upset and disturbed by the encounter, she couldn’t figure out if anything was missing. Her husband arrived and told deputies that a rifle and ammunition had been taken. Deputies found a backpack nearby containing some of the ammunition, and they followed fresh tracks through multiple backyards until they came upon a home with a surveillance system. They reviewed the video and saw a man matching the description carrying a rifle case and walking into the woods near Butterfly Lane. Deputies searched the woods and found 19-year-old Tajari Gabriel Phillips hiding under a blanket next to a tree. He did not have the rifle with him so deputies backtracked and with the help of witnesses they found the rifle concealed under a brush pile. Phillips has priors for possession of stolen property and stolen cars. He’s being held in jail until his arraignment.
