Driver Of Stolen Vehicle Held On 1.2 Million Dollars Bail

The man facing a murder charge in connection to a stolen car chase on Wednesday has an established history of car theft. Wednesday morning Anderson Police chased a stolen Honda Civic south on Highway 273, into the Shasta Gateway Center, then onto southbound Interstate Five. At the Main Street Exit to Cottonwood, the driver abruptly shot over from the fast lane and lost control, sending the Honda over the embankment. It landed upside down, killing a passenger identified as 21-year-old Ethan George Purdy of Redding. The alleged driver, 28-year-old Derrick Gary Tope, and a female passenger were treated and released from the hospital. Tope was arraigned Friday on charges of murder, evading with disregard to safety, false imprisonment, possession of a stolen car and several other charges. Tope was also arraigned on four other stolen vehicle cases, and he’s already on formal probation for possession of a stolen vehicle. His bail is set at 1.2 Million Dollars for the new charges and a judge ordered a no-bail hold for the probation violation.
