The Shasta County Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed in a stolen car chase Wednesday morning. 21-year-old Ethan George Purdy of Redding was a passenger in the front seat of a car that crashed while being chased by Anderson Police. At 7:20AM, APD Officers spotted the stolen Honda Civic heading south on Highway 273. They tried to stop the car, but the driver fled and turned into the Shasta Gateway Center. While approaching the Main Street exit to Cottonwood, the driver abruptly shot over from the fast lane to the exit, but lost control. The Honda went over the embankment and rolled, landing upside-down along Rhonda Road. Officers provided first aid until medical help arrived. All three occupants were transported to a hospital. The driver, identified as 28-year-old Derrick Gary Tope, and a female passenger were treated and released. Purdy died of his injuries. Tope has been booked into jail and charged with homicide, evading with disregard to safety, false imprisonment, possession of a stolen car and several other felonies.
