A Trinity County man has been sentenced to prison on a child molestation charge. According to the Trinity Journal, Hayfork resident Billy Ray Bates Jr. was sentenced Tuesday to eight years for his conviction on one count of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. A psychologist’s report said Bates was a low risk to re-offend, but added that the report did not take into account the testimony of three prior alleged victims. Judge Michael Harper said they were very credible, as was the victim in this case. The victim’s mother said the molestation changed her daughter from a fun-loving child who got good grades to withdrawn, anxious and scared. Bates was arrested in December 2017. A jury found him guilty in June.
