New population figures show that Chico is the fastest growing city in America. The dramatic population increase is not surprising, considering that a majority of people who lost their homes in the Camp Fire ended up in Oroville and Chico. State Department of Finance Figures show that Chico’s population increased by about 19,000 as of January 1st, to 112,121. The fire destroyed almost 90 percent of the housing stock and displaced 83 percent of the population in the Town of Paradise, which suffered the loss of 11,371 housing units. Countywide, Butte lost 14,600 units.
