The allegedly abusive father of two-month-old twin babies from Yreka is being held without bail, and apparently has a history of being violent with babies. That’s according to a story in the Siskiyou Daily News. On March 25th Yreka Police were called to Fairchild Medical Center on a report of an infant with a skull fracture and a major brain injury. It was soon discovered that the baby’s twin sister also had a traumatic brain injury. Both babies were transferred to UC Davis Medical Center for further care. Last week they were listed in critical but stable condition. Yreka Police Department and Siskiyou Unified Major Investigation Team got a search warrant for the family’s Knapp Street home and arrested both parents, 31-year-old Stephanie Hayes and 35-year-old Joshua Njaa. Two other children were placed with child protective services. Both parents were arraigned Thursday. Hayes has been released on her own recognizance. She’s legally blind, and a prosecutor says he thinks she may have been unaware of the ongoing abuse. The babies both showed signs of previous injuries. Njaa is charged with multiple counts of great bodily harm to a child, aggravated mayhem and more. In 2002 he pleaded guilty to corporal injury of a child after causing life-threatening injuries to a 16-month old baby. He served 4 years in prison. If convicted of the current charges, he could get a life sentence.
