The man who was shot dead by Redding Police Tuesday has been identified as 48-year-old Donnell James Lang of Redding. At around 3:30PM Tuesday afternoon, one or more callers reported that Lang was acting strangely in the area of McConnell Foundation property on Shasta View Drive across the street from Mountain View Middle School. They said he was possibly watching children and at least one caller said Lang had an item tucked into his waistband that looked like it could be a handgun. Lang matched the description of the man and officers detained him in the adjacent residential neighborhood on Hemingway Street. Redding Police Captain Eric Wallace said Lang was semi cooperative at first but became very uncooperative when officers tried to search him for weapons. During the ensuing struggle, one of the officers fired several shots and Lang died at the scene. No weapon has been found. The sheriff’s office major crimes unit is leading the investigation, and they’re asking for witnesses or video footage that may have been captured of Lang prior to or during the incident. Detectives can be reached at 245-6135 or mcu@co.shasta.ca.us. An autopsy on Lang is set for next week.
