Two bear cubs have been found alone in Siskiyou County and state officials want to know what happened. The cubs were found in the Long Gulch Area on Highway 96 in Yreka on Saturday, March 9th after a concerned citizen contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Officers searched the area, but they were unable to locate the mother. The cubs were taken to the Wildlife Investigations Laboratory in Sacramento County where they were evaluated by wildlife veterinarians. Once given a clean bill of health, they were transferred to the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, a wildlife rehabilitation facility permitted to care for bears. Wildlife officers believe one or more persons may be responsible for unlawfully separating the young bears from their mother. Officers are continuing their investigation, including processing evidence left at the scene.
