The Redding City Council will consider doubling the police department’s number of community service officer positions. The job of a CSO is to take reports, complete paperwork, and do other routine police work in order to free up sworn officers for more urgent tasks. The proposal is to add four CSO’s to the force, for a total of eight. That would allow for one CSO to work each of the department’s rotating shifts. Their salaries would be paid out of accumulated salary savings. The purchase of three pickup trucks and equipment for the CSO’s would be paid with $100,000 of revenue from the red light camera enforcement system. The council meeting starts at 6 O’clock Tuesday evening.
