A special effort by the California Highway Patrol over this long new years weekend will focus on slowing down the flow of traffic. A “Maximum Enforcement Period” begins at 6 O’clock Friday night and lasts through Midnight on New Years Day. Speed limit enforcement will be the goal, but CHP drug recognition experts will also be combing the roads for impaired drivers. During the Maximum Enforcement Period last New Years there were 40 people killed on California roadways and two-thirds of them were not wearing a seatbelt, so that’s another major focus this weekend. There were no fatalities on Shasta County roadways during this year’s Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period.
