California GOP Ponders Way Forward After Stunning Losses

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A string of losses has set off a fresh round of Republican soul-searching in California, where the party has been drifting toward irrelevance for years. Republican U.S. Rep. Mimi Walters was defeated Thursday in the heart of Orange County, once a nationally known Republican stronghold. Things are so bad for Republicans in the state they didn’t even have a candidate on the ballot for U.S. Senate. Democrats are on track to hold every statewide office. And with Walters’ loss to newcomer Katie Porter, Democrats will hold at least a 44-9 edge in California U.S. House seats. There is one race yet to be decided. Former Assembly Republican leader Kristin Olsen says the party “isn’t salvageable at this time.”
