Hot foods can now temporarily be purchased using CalFresh EBT benefits, according to the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency. The temporary waiver was issued by the California Department of Social Services in response to the state’s wildfires. Due to power outages, displacement, and destruction caused by the wildfires many residents were forced to leave their homes and have no ability to store food or don’t have access to cooking facilities. The waivers have been issued for CalFresh households in Shasta County as well as a number of northern counties. The waiver will be granted until September 16th. Retailers have been notified of the waiver, but can opt out.
