A 3-year-old girl nearly drown on Shasta Lake Saturday evening, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies with the boating safety unit were called to the Bridge Bay Marina about 9:20PM after a young child was reported missing from a parked housboat at the dock. Mark Benzinger from Kneeland was visiting his family and they had just finished dinner. The family had finished cleaning up and began to get the children ready for bed. They noticed that their daughter was missing, and a frantic search began. They found the girls toothbrush floating in the lake near the houseboat. One of the family members went to a neighboring houseboat for help and they apparently had scuba gear onboard. Benzinger put the gear on and went to the bottom of the lake about 70 feet deep. He was able to find his daughter and brought her to the surface. Medical staff arrived on scene and the girl was taken to Mercy Hospital and then flown to UC Davis Medical Center. Her current condition is not known. She was not wearing a lifejack, but was not required to, according to the sheriffs office.
