CHP Pilot Helps Pilot Who Crashed Landed Small Plane

A gust of wind wrecked an airplane in Fall River Mills Saturday. 59-year-old Jerry Jones has had his pilot’s license for a couple of years and on Wednesday he bought a 1968 Cessna 185 Skywagon. Flight instructor Heather Jay was with him and she described his touchdown at Totten Airfield as “very nice”. However, as the plane slowed down on the runway the right side of the plane was hit with a southeast gust. Jones tried to counteract it with the left rudder and brake but the plane did what’s called a “ground loop”, collapsing the left landing gear, left wing and propeller. Both Jones and Jay were able to walk away. They were assisted by a CHP pilot who was flying from Alturas to Redding. He spotted the wrecked plane from above and landed to check it out. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office then took over the investigation.
