Hiker Rescued Near Grizzly Peak

A tracking device proved its worth for a German hiker who got lost in Northeastern Shasta County. At around 11AM Thursday the State Office of Emergency Services contacted the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office to tell them an emergency personal locator device had been activated in the area of Grizzly Peak near the Siskiyou County line. Deputies were joined by State Game Wardens and Cal-Fire personnel as they arrived near the GPS coordinates. They walked about a mile and found a drenched and freezing 19-year-old Magalie Viezens of Germany. Viezens was treated for exposure and transported out of the woods. This was the second person this week who had to be rescued from the Pacific Crest Trail near Grizzly Peak.
