A particularly cruel telephone scam has cropped up in Red Bluff. Police have gotten four separate reports from Red Bluff residents. The victim gets a call from someone claiming to have kidnapped their daughter. The sounds of a female struggling and screaming can be heard in the background. The caller, who has a Hispanic accent, demands ransom money. The caller tells the victim to remain on the phone as they go to the bank and do a wire transfer of the money into an account in Mexico. The suspect says he’ll release the daughter after the money is deposited. He forces the victim to stay on the phone so they can’t call and check on their daughter’s welfare. None of the four reported victims have fallen for the scam and there have been no actual kidnappings. The calls are apparently coming from somewhere in Mexico.
