White water enthusiasts may want to check out the Pit River sometime in the next few weeks, while others should stay away. The river will more than quadruple in size on a 6.5 mile stretch. PG&E operates several hydroelectric dams along the Pit River and they need to do maintenance on the Pit One Powerhouse, so the water is not being diverted as it usually is. Flows of about 200 cubic feet per second have started increasing to a level of 800 to 900 cubic feet per second. The river flow will remain at that level through November 20th. Despite years of drought, flows in the Pit River have remained at normal levels because it’s fed by springs percolating from volcanic aquifers. People who want to ride the river should be aware of class 4 and class 5 rapids, which are only recommended for experienced paddlers.
